Overview and insight into schema therapy. A method of the 3rd wave of cognitive behavioral therapy. Schema therapy is a newly developed form of psychotherapy that incorporates elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, and emotion-focused humanistic therapies -such as Gestalt therapy- with the goal of treating personality disorders and other psychological problems. The word schema (life trap) here refers specifically to an early maladaptive pattern defined as dysfunctional. Schemas are developed in childhood or adolescence and continue to be used throughout life. Schema therapy offers a wide range of diagnostic tools and interventions.
